Protest. Protest Them All.

No, of course Mitch McConnell is not going to vote to tax the rich or preserve benefits for the poor, disabled and elderly. But that doesn't mean demonstrations don't matter. McConnell can't say his constituents don't care, and Louisville commuters can't say they don't know what's at stake.

Chris Kenning at the Courier:

More than two dozen demonstrators from Occupy Louisville and other groups held signs and chanted outside the Louisville office of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell on Wednesday, urging him to spare Medicare, Social Security and social programs as part of federal budget negotiations.

Others from groups including Jobs with Justice and the Kentucky Alliance against Racist and Political Repression held signs reading “No cuts to medicare and social security” and shouted chants favoring higher taxes on the rich as passing cars honked their horns.

“We will not allow the debt to be used as a smokescreen” to further the interests of the wealthy over the poor and middle class, said K.A. Owens, co-chair of the Kentucky Alliance. “We’re not interested in a grand bargain that cuts into social programs.”
