In Danville, VP Debate Reason to Par-Tay

During Kentucky's two months of gorgeous autumn, we need very little excuse to hold a festival - any community activity at all will draw musicians, artisans, craft sellers, flea marketeers and cranks of every variety.

In an election year, any such gathering will draw every politician within driving distance.

They don't always come all the way from D.C., though.

Greg Kocher and Beth Musgrave at the Herald:

Hundreds gathered on the Centre College lawn Thursday afternoon to enjoy live music during the Vice Presidential Debate Festival.

Under a clear, sunny sky, people sat in folding chairs or on the ground to listen to local music acts. On Thursday night, the debate between Vice President Joe Biden and U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan will be broadcast live from the Norton Center of the Arts to the outdoor crowd across the street via a large-screen TV next to the music stage.

The festival was sponsored by AARP, the powerful lobbying organization for seniors.

Paul and Sue Guffey of Somerset, both wearing Obama/Biden buttons, basked in the sun and temperatures in the 60s as they listened to music and waited for the debate.

"So far I'm impressed with the way it's been organized," Paul Guffey said.

As for the debate participants, Guffey said, "I just hope to hear a clear statement of their positions because I think they're real different."
Della and Dave Scheurich of Danville sat closer to the stage. Della Scheurich said she thought it "was important for America to see Danville and Kentucky."
"You always hear about California. You always hear about New York," she said. "But you never hear about middle America and how middle America is the backbone of this country. The backbone of America is right here in Danville."

Where partisans on opposite sides are exchanging smiles, not rocks. They are WAY too civilized in Danville.
