Surrender Monkeys
The liberal blogosphere is surrendering on health care reform and I can't fucking believe it.
First we get Steven Benen seconding the white flag raised by Paul Begala, mewling that even FDR didn't get the perfect Social Security bill at first.
Then Benen piles on with a fine whine about how the public option is really a luxury, because it's so much more than Howard Dean proposed in 2004.
Listen up, you puling cowards: This is not not 1936. It's not 1964. It's not 1993. It's not even 2008.
The horrific clusterfuck that passes for health care in this country is catastrophically worse than it was even just one year ago, and the speed at which it is getting worse is increasing exponentially.
Incremental improvements, slighter tighter regs, minimal subsidies just won't cut it.
The truth is, even an Incredible Hulk of a public option probably won't cut it - only total and immediate single-payer will.
Pretending we don't really need a public option because it's so "new" isn't just not helpful, it's downright destructive.
As Washington Monthly commenter SW makes clear:
It isn't really true that Obama has followed FDR's example. If you go back and listen to FDR's approach he savaged the Republicans. He ridiculed them. He tore into them. He denigrated them. He heaped scorn on them. The public then as now were disgusted with the Republicans and he fanned those flames he encouraged these sentiments and built on them rather than taking Obama's misguided tack of bipartisanship. When you have the advantage, when the other side is down, that is when you have to stomp on them. Not offer them a seat at the table. There is nothing so dangerous as a wounded animal. You just have to destroy it.
If you still need a reason to refill your antidepressants, this piece from Down With Tyranny will do the trick.
But if you reject the surrender monkeys and refuse to give up:
Here's a quick way to get to the contact information for your elected officials. (Scroll down to box on the right labelled "My Elected Officials" and enter your zip code.)
