A banner reading "Refugees Welcome" was hung from the Statue of Liberty's
pedestal on Tuesday.
The banner measured about 3 by 20 feet, according to a report by NBC New York, and was unfurled across the statue's pedestal just before 1 p.m. National Park Service rangers removed it after they determined that the banner, which was hung with nylon ropes, could be removed without damaging the structure.
Shame on you, National Park Service. The United States Park Service is investigating who hung the banner and how they did so, per NBC's report.According to a report by Fusion, activists hung the banner in response to President Donald Trump's executive order temporarily barring visitors from seven predominantly Muslim countries.
“We’ve seen since the election in November a lot of people who’ve never been political before, feeling like they needed to do something,” one said, as quoted by Fusion. “And I think this is one thing that four people today did, but I think that we’re seeing that across the country in a lot of different ways.”

Members of the resistance have created alternative twitter accounts while agencies like NASA and the National Park Service are under occupation and being censored. It’s GLORIOUS!You know what happens when you piss off people who love both their jobs and the environment? You get resistance. By Tuesday afternoon, a rogue “AltUSNatParkService” Twitter account had been started by NPS employees, outside the official NPS Twitter channel. The rogue Tweeters made it very clear it was Park Service workers posting on their own time, and therefore not breaking any rules, so there. The channel description:The Unofficial “Resistance” team of U.S. National Park Service. Not taxpayer subsidised! Come for rugged scenery, fossil beds, 89 million acres of landscapeA sampling of their Tweets:

And there are more:In addition, the account has been tweeting climate data, proof of climate change, statements by scientific organizations, and even a “shoutout to the anonymous crews at @BadIandsNPS continuing the great work of the original before Trump’s (tiny) hand came down.” Free of the constraints of a government account, they got a little uppity, urging people to call their representatives to demand the gag orders be lifted and directing readers to the NPS website on climate change and how the Parks Service will work to preserve cultural resources, with the warning “Pls download before it is removed.”

We’re a growing coalition of 59 National Park Service employees from nine different National Parks. We formed to ensure the protection of the environment for future generations to come. We were forced into a media blackout, hiring freeze, policy changes, and possible reduction in funding. We are here to stand up and speak out against the current administration. We all refuse to be silenced while we watch everything we love crumble.
