Remember this the next time you're tempted to complain about the cost or quality of public services provided by public employees: privatization costs more and works less.
In 2008 most Chicago parking meters were 25-cents/hour,
but Mayor Richard Daley (D) leased the city’s parking meters to Chicago
Parking Meters LLC. In 2013, rates will be $6.50/hour inside the Loop,
$4.00/hour near the Loop, and $2/hour elsewhere. In 2014, rates will
be “tied to the rate of inflation”. Plus, the city has to pony up when
meters are out of service. Privatization. What’s there not to love?
