Shutting Down to Avoid Treating Workers Fairly

You know that Lynn's Paradise Cafe is not the only restaurant in Kentucky that is exploiting bad labor law to fuck over employees. But it's one of the few so pissed that staff dared to complain that it shut down rather than start treating them fairly.

Mike Vanderhoff at the Courier:

One of Louisville’s best known restaurants has closed after a controversy over a new employee policy.
Lynn’s Paradise Cafe closed Friday after 22 years in business.

Lynn Winter, the owner and founder of the restaurant, did not respond to a request for a phone interview but confirmed the closure in an email Saturday morning.

The closure comes on the heels of a controversy that alleged mistreatment of employees at the restaurant.

A flyer on the Kentucky Jobs with Justice website alleged the restaurant’s policy requiring servers to bring $100 to each shift to pay “support staff” was designed so the restaurant would not have to pay the support staff minimum wage.
Kentucky’s labor laws allow employers to pay employees $2.13 per hour, instead of the minimum wage of $7.25 per hour, if an employee makes at least $30 per month in tips, according to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division.

If you get bad service at a restaurant (not that bad service was a problem at Lynn's), instead of punishing your server with a chintzy tip, try asking management why their pay policies are so unjust that staff are taking it out on customers.
