Number 83

Tech. Sgt. Anthony C. Campbell Jr., 35, of Florence, Ky., died Dec. 15 of wounds suffered from the detonation of an improvised explosive device in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. Campbell was assigned to the 932nd Civil Engineer Squadron, Scott Air Force Base, Ill.

He had just joined the Cincinnati Police Department.

A Cincinnati Police Officer serving with U.S. Armed Forces in Afghanistan gave the ultimate sacrifice Monday.

Anthony C. Campbell, Jr., 35, was a member of the winter 2009 police recruit class and was with the department only a few weeks before his deployment overseas.

Cincinnati Mayor Mark Mallory released the following statement Tuesday: “Cincinnati grieves today with the news that we have lost a member of our city family as he served our country overseas,” Mayor Mallory said. “We offer our sincerest sympathies to Officer Campbell’s family and friends. We honor his deep commitment to public service both at home in Cincinnati and abroad.”

Campbell, a 1992 graduate of Boone County High School, was assigned to the 932nd Airwing Group in Illinois. He also served in the Air Force from 1992-95.

Campbell and his wife, Emily, had two young children together. Campbell also had a stepson with Emily.

And the next 30,000 hometown casualties haven't even gotten there yet.
