"Heroes" Is Not A Compliment
If you've ever met a recipient of the Medal of Honor (don't you dare call them "winners"; it's not the fucking lottery), you know that they forcefully reject the label "hero."
When they say, "I'm not a hero, anybody in the same situation would have done the same thing," they're not being disingenuous. They mean it.
So stop saying it.
From Firedoglake:
- Calling soldiers as “heroes” dehumanizes them. It ignores what they faced and will continue to face.
