Black Americans did not abandon liberal democracy because of slavery, Jim Crow, and the systematic destruction of whatever wealth they managed to accumulate; instead they took up arms in two world wars to defend it.

Japanese Americans did not reject liberal democracy because of internment or the racist humiliation of Asian exclusion; they risked life and limb to preserve it.

Latinos did not abandon liberal democracy because of “Operation Wetback,” or Proposition 187, or because of a man who won a presidential election on the strength of his hostility toward Latino immigrants.

Gay, lesbian, and trans Americans did not abandon liberal democracy over decades of discrimination and abandonment in the face of an epidemic.

This is, in part, because doing so would be tantamount to giving the state permission to destroy them, a thought so foreign to these defenders of the supposedly endangered religious right that the possibility has not even occurred to them. 

But it is also because of a peculiar irony of American history: The American creed has no more devoted adherents than those who have been historically denied its promises, and no more fair-weather friends than those who have taken them for granted.

As Molly Ivins wrote, the history of America is one long struggle to bestow the rights the Constitution gave to only rich white men to all those the Constitution left out: black people and female people and brown people and poor people and asian people disabled people and LGBTQ people.

Extending and expanding those rights makes this nation stronger.  Denying them makes us weak.

Pete Buttigieg is getting some left-wing love for supposedly calling out Xian hypocrites for their hate-filled attacks on immigrants.

Buttigieg said that although Democrats “stand for people of any religion and no religion,” Democrats should “call out hypocrisy when we see it” when it comes to the violation of Christian principles.

“And for a party that associates itself with Christianity to say that it is ok, to suggest that God would smile on the division of families at the hands of federal agents,” he said, “that God would condone putting children in cages has lost all claim to ever use religious language again.”

Matt Bevin: Women Are Sub-Human Incubators

Because that's what you really mean when you deny women bodily autonomy.  When you insist that they endure forced birth.  When you mandate that their doctors rape them with foreign objects.  Not Missouri: Kentucky.

Gov. Matt Bevin's legal team this week fuiled a response opposing EMW Women's Surgical Center's petition for rehearing in a recent federal court case that resulted in a major pro-life anti-woman victory for the Commonwealth woman-hating freakazoids.

In contrast, Attorney General Andy Beshear refused to say anything in defense of the law, arguing simply that he should not have to be involved refused to defend a blatantly un-constitutional law that violates women's 14th Amendment rights to equal protection under the law, and women's human rights to bodily autonomy.

In April, the anti-woman freakazoids on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit upheld the constitutionality of House Bill 2 (2017). The Americans who respect a woman's bodily autonomy - consistently 60 to 80 percent of the population - are going to have to stop pretending that there is some kind of compromise or middle ground with the wingnut freakazoids on the issue of female bodily autonomy.

To do that, we are going to have to stop mealy-mouthing on abortion and start saying - no, screaming - flat out that:

• The multi-celled object that grows inside a uterus is not a baby, a child, a precious or unborn anything.  Until it can breathe air outside the uterus, it most closely resembles a tumor.
  
• Until it does breathe air outside the uterus, it is, indeed, a part of the woman's body.
   
• Like a tumor, it steals food and energy from the woman's body, weakening and debilitating her, and subjecting her to high risk of injury and death if she undergoes forced birth.
  
• Only the woman is qualified to decide whether to take that risk or quickly,  easily and safely remove the tumor.
  
• Therefore, abortion is nobody's fucking business.
  
• Women will not have civil or human rights in this country until we have Abortion on Demand.
  
• That means no restrictions, no bullshit requirements, no questions asked.
  
• That means federally-funded abortion clinics on every fucking street corner in America and fuck you if you don't like it, it's none of your fucking business.

They're not coming for just Roe vs. Wade.  Griswold vs. Connecticut (right to contraception) is just a stepping stone.  They're gonna steamroll over Brown vs. Board (unsegretated schools.) They won't be satisfied until they've repealed the Equal Protection of the 14th Amendment.

Because only then will only rich, white, straight, conservative, christian, republican men have any rights in the country that won't be America any more.

Everybody Who Thinks McConnell Is Going to Help These Coal Miners, Stand On Your Head

Because a pension fund for thousands of coal miners faces insolvency within three years, a contingent of retired coal workers will descend on the Capitol Wednesday, hoping to convince Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to back a fix.

It’s the ninth consecutive year the group has pressed Congress to act — but McConnell wants a broader fix to ensure the health of the federally chartered Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp., which insures millions of Americans in defined benefits pension plans but is facing its own fiscal challenges.

“There is momentum to fix the entire system, but that’s going to move slowly,” said Phil Smith, director of government affairs for the United Mine Workers of America. “Our plan is separate because we can’t wait for a global pension fix.”

Smith said the slump in the coal industry and company bankruptcies have hurt the pension fund, which now has just one major company, Murray Energy, contributing to the fund.

Sen. Joe Manchin, D-West Virginia, who is sponsoring legislation to address the coal miners’ pensions and will appear Wednesday at a press conference to push his legislation, said Tuesday he wants a more sweeping fix, but worries about the immediate risk for the retired coal workers and their families.

“I don’t know how he can just turn his back on the miners in Kentucky and West Virginia,” Manchin said of McConnell in an interview Tuesday. “He just can’t continue to stonewall them and leave them with nothing.”

As if The Treason Turtle has ever done anything BUT stonewall working Kentuckians and leave them with nothing.

Of course he will stonewall them.  And of course every single one of them who is still alive after their pensions are taken away is going to vote for Bevin this fall and McConnell and Trump next year.

Three: Until a single legislative body in the United States of America passes a single fucking law regulating anything a man does with his own body, no legislative body in the United States of America has any right to pass a single fucking law regulating anything a woman does with her own body.

Four:  It is none of your fucking business.

Five: Abortion is a simple, safe, effective medical procedure, and none of your fucking business.

As the sole white woman on Joy's panel discussion of the simultaneously psychotic and pathetic Republican march towards eliminating the protections of Roe v. Wade, Winstead offered the following advice to people wondering how they can help.

I've been to every single one of these [states,] I've been to Alabama four times, Georgia twice, Mississippi five times, Kentucky twice. the activists on the ground, and this is super important to realize, is that the activists on the ground are doing incredible work and a lot of this work legislatively, the abortion funds helping poor women are run by tremendously bad-@ss, if I can, women of color. So when these things happen, when people are like, "What can I do, what can I do?" the first thing you can do is just Google that state and find out where their abortion fund is, find out where those reproductive justice organizations are on the ground and donate to them first. Support them first.

Do we hear that, white ladies? Black women are already ON THIS. They have already mobilized, and have been for YEARS. Because white people did this to Black women FIRST. We have been for centuries. Name me a moment - just a MOMENT in American history when Black women had total control over their reproductive lives. I'll wait. (No, I won't — I have things to do.) White women are so blown away by the Handmaid's Tale, and meanwhile Black women are saying, "We've been living this for centuries."

Country House's win in the 2019 Kentucky Derby will be remembered throughout history for a number of reasons.

The first thing people will talk about is the finish. Maximum Security was declared the winner initially, but Country House eventually was named the victor after an objection led to a disqualification.

But people will also remember Country House's long odds. The Bill Mott-trained colt was a 65-1 long shot at post time, among the longest odds in the race.

And in the immortal words of a soaked Infield attendee, "It's not a real Derby unless it rains."
